Oh that sounded bad. Sorry.
when I said that, I meant if I felt like babblemailing someone I didn't really post to, but just wanted to offer some genuine support to someone having a rough time. I worried that it would be taken as my wanting the inside scoop on what was going on, so I seldom did it.
It was more my own worry than thinking that about everyone else.
I'm really fortunate, all the people I've had come into my personal life through babble, have been really excellent people.

I had one person (no longer here) who was always wanting to know, and second guess who was doing what on babble and why, but that wasn't my thing and once that was made clear there wasn't much left.

You have nothing to apologize for. You did nothing wrong. You merely stated the obvious. Only a handful of posters probably didn't know.

Even I figured it out after all the clues "5" left.

I'm not saying it was done with ill intent.
And sure some would have figured it out,It wasn't obvious to everyone though.

And I know a few people who've changed their name because they don't want people to search the archives and associate them with previous information. OR they have someone at home who has figured out where they post and who they are, so they want a change.

The full name would show up clearly in a babble search, including the post revealing the old and new name.
The initials left by 5 would not be so easy to find, nor did she make a direct link from one name to the other. Obviously for her own reasons she was trying to be discrete.
And I don't think it's really up to us to decide whether or not it's valid, or whether or not she did a good enough job.

It's not just about us seeing "well it's obvious anyway, why not just say it"
I've seen people direct other posters to an e-mail address that a poster has left for someone in particular. Í'd feel invaded by that too, though I probably wouldn't get really angry, but unless it was two people I knew very well, I'd find it presumptuous.

So, 5, are you xxx?

You do not have to answer if you do not want to of course.

Peace,

Since I just xxx'd out the revelation of the prior posting name of a current poster, which no poster is under an obligation to give, and which no poster should be pressured to give, I also xxxx'd out a name in this post. However, since it was asked as a question rather than a statement, I have asked Dr. Bob, and if he thinks it's appropriate he'll restore the name.

In the meantime, could everyone please wait for his determination before posting it again?

And as for the why of it, I think Gabbi explained it very well in her post above.

i really am sorry :-(
sometimes... get a little lost between then and now
and them and people here
and what happened before and what happens now

and people here copped the lot
and i'm sorry for the things i've said :-(
i think some of it comes from...
spread of affect
rather than informing of affect too
i'm sorry
i hurt a lot :-(
but that is no excuse
it is now :-(
and i'm really very sorry.
i don't think i've ever gone off like that before...
though maybe i have a little in the past...
but maybe not like that because usually...
people call me on it and say they won't have anything to do with me if i continue :-(
and so then i take it out on myself.
i haven't done that.
feel bad
real bad
but i haven't done that.

but i'm really very sorry
and i hope it never happens again
really very sorry :-(

and maybe we will go to councellors here...
maybe we will...
just terrified about privacy
and terrified about rejection
and terrified about things having to get worse before better
and terrified about being deported
and i'm really very sorry
but maybe...
it will come to that :-(

> since it was asked as a question rather than a statement, I have asked Dr. Bob, and if he thinks it's appropriate he'll restore the name.

I think the guiding principle here should be sensitivity to the feelings of the person posting under the new name. It's natural to wonder who they are, but they changed their name for a reason, and it may have been to get a fresh start.

If you're curious, one thing you can do is check their initial post on Admin, they may have said there who they used to be.

Another option, as 5 said, is to ask them. But ask them how they feel about being connected to their old name, not whether they used to be x or y, since if they're uncomfortable being connected to their old name, they're probably going to be uncomfortable having others guess.

Does that make sense? Thanks,

Bob
