Effexor and Insomnia

Posted by Rob on August 14, 1999, at 7:40:11

Does anyone here suffer from this problem and are their any solutions to it that do not require a prescription med? I'm taking 75mg in the morning and on average I can only muster about 5hrs. max a night. Does Valerian work, or Kava. I'm taking St. Johns Wort with it. It has helped to improve my quality of sleep.
Thanks

I have had problems with Effexor and insomnia every time I up the dose, but it went away each time after about three or four days.

Cyproheptidine has worked to knock me out, too, which is an anti-histimine. You might try benadryl or the like. They really do work, but take them early in the evening, since they tend to be long lasting...

I used to have problems with Effexor affecting my
sleep and chronic insomnia, even taking 300 mg of
trazadone at night. Oh, I was taking 150 mg of Effexor
in the morning, and 150 mg at night.

My doc switched me to the Effexor XR, one dose in the
morning (300 mg), and that helped dramatically.

Also, try not to drink any caffeine (including
soft drinks and iced tea!!!) late in the afternoon
or evening. Don't exercise too late in the evening
either, as these could keep you awake, too.

Good luck.

PS: Neither Valerian or melatonin ever helped me
sleep or stay asleep.
