Transcranial-Magnetic-Stimulation(TMS)

Posted by Antrock on August 26, 1999, at 14:11:39

I have recently been accepted to enter a trial study using TMS as a treatment for depression. The study is being performed at Beth Isreal Hospital in Boston, Ma.
From what I have read,(journals,web-sites)the procedure is extremely safe with no reported adverse reactions (slight headaches in some)and no memory loss. TMS has been studied for the treatment of depression for about 9 years. Although I generally feel confident in what I have read based on the studies to date, I am still unsure as to whether I should pursue such a new and experimental treatment. Anhedonia/fatigue has made me willing to try anything that might help alleviate the ongoing suffering. If anyone has any relevant information(positive or negative) regarding TMS they would like to share, I would greatly appreciate a response.

I had TMS at Beth Israel last year. It didn't do anything for me, but it was a one-size fits all approach, which Dr. Pascual-Leone said often doesn't fit all. I'm looking for other trials I can do, because I think it has a lot of potential.

It wasn't painful at all, no headaches, no memory loss, etc. TMS is totally different from ECT as far as adverse effects. I won't take the risk of ECT wiping out my memory, but I'd do TMS every day of the year if I could.

I'm curious as to what kind of trial you're doing -- did they tell you the frequency used (mine was 10Hz)? Will it be left side or both sides?

Good Luck,

Wombat
