Hi.
I am considering trying Provigil (modafinil) to treat my bipolar depression. I may start it within the next few days.
Before making the decision, I would be encouraged if I could hear of a few more success stories. It would be helpful if I could receive some input regarding the following questions:
1. Did Provigil work? How well and in what ways?
2. What other drugs were you taking at the time?
3. What is your diagnosis? How severe was your depression?
4. Have you experienced any side effects?
5. Did it produce sedation? Did the sedation disappear?
6. How did you go about starting it? What is the dosage you are taking now?As always, thanks for any help on this.
Sincerely,
Scott

I am writing to respond to the following question:

I have been taking Provigil for six days. I am taking it for a sleep problem, not depression. I think that it is probably the wrong medicine for me. My problem is that I have trouble falling asleep, and so a medicine to stay awake seems like the wrong thing. But the doctor wanted to try this, so I am.
Anyway, I definitely find it very sedating. The doctor does not believe this.
Within the last few days, I have been noticing more of the stimulating, "wake up" effect that I was hoping for. Unfortunately, this comes only after the sedation wears off. It takes ten to fifteen hours for the sedation to wear off. The doctor absolutely insists that I take the Provigil with breakfast. You can see the result: sedated all day, stimulated all night. It's the worst of both worlds!
Because of this, I did not take my Provigil this morning. I may take it this evening, in spite of what the doctor says, I'm not sure.
In my case, I think that the "cure" is all out of proportion to the problem. I had some insomnia, and now I've got this medication that is getting my life all messed up.
But everyone is different, so there is no telling if anyone else will be affected this way.
This is the end of the thread.
