Ma huang/ ephedrine for depression

Posted by PhoenixGirl on February 5, 2001, at 15:58:48

I've read that the herb ma-huang is similar to norepinepherine, and may relieve depression. Has anyone ever heard of this? I also read that it can cause euphoria, but it seems that a substance that can cause euphoria would not be available over the counter. But who knows. I read about ma huang and ephedrine on a website about CNS stimulants.

>Hi Phoenix,

I have used ma-huang (epehedra) on several occassions. It is a CNS stimulant. It does increase heart rate. I have found it's stimulating effects last only about a week before poop out. It works as an appetite suppressant for that amount of time also. It has not been a good drug for me. It's benefits are just too short lived. I have never found it to produce any euphoric or anti-depressant properties. Infact, it made me feel like I was PMS. It did not help my anhadonia or social phobia. Again, everyone is different. Give it a try. Effects are immediate so there is no great investment in time by way of a long trial. Personally, my hunch is it probably won't do what your looking for it to do.

All the best,

Kathy

I believe the story is always the same with ephedrine/ Ma huang. That is increased energy and, for some, elevated mood for a time and then a crash where you are lower than when you started. I would suggest you avoid either of these. BTW take claims on the internet, especially by those selling there products, with a grain of salt.

I believe I was hooked on epherdrine for 5 years and nobody knew. I finally quit because of the bad publicity it got.
It's bad for you, can cause heart deffects. When I took it I could run for miles (18 miles non stop at one point). I became very thin at first, I had lots of energy but it made me very bitchy.
I'm now on Wellbutrin SR (3 wks) and have had no side effects, I sleep like a baby, I have not lost weight, and I wonder if it's because of the ephedrine. I am to embarrassed to tell my doctor I was hooked on ephedrine.
As far as I can tell Wellbutrin has had no effect on me.
What do you think?

Lmm,

I've heard about Wellbutrin not having an effect on some people. I take it, and it has no antidepressant effects on me. It helps me stay awake during the day, which is the only reason I take it. When I first started, it was too stimulating, but that has subsided a great deal to where it has little effect on me. Maybe you are just one of those people. I don't know whether or not being hooked on a stimulant causes permanent or long-term changes in the brain that could be affecting your response to Wellbutrin.

> >Hi Phoenix girl;
I was addicted to ephedrine. At first, it was great, i had more energy, alertness and lost weight on it. Over time, I built tolerance to it and needed more and more to function. I had horrible hangovers in the AM.
The initial effect disappeared very quickly and I was getting increasingly angry and short- tempered.

Just my personal experience, hope it helps.
