I've had a lot of success with lamictal. I also gained about 15 lbs on it--but less than 25% do.
I stopped the lamictal because of weight gain, tried about every other drug there is (to supplement nardil) and finally went back to lamictal because it had been such a horrible year.
Once again, I am not totally not depressed, but much much less depressed with the lamictal and have increased it, so maybe I will not be depressed at all. My pdoc said she's had a lot of success with it, you just have to build up slowly. I have unipolar depression. shelli

Hi.
If you read the BIPOLAR EXPERT PLS thread above you'll see Lamactil is the first drug of over 20 (incl. all the ADs) to have seriously helped me. I'm only on the starting dose of 25mg, but already the suicidality has lifted & my cognition is improving. V. encouraging, especially bearing in mind the (as yet) lack of side-effects. Though I've been dx'ed unipolar, the aforementioned thread shows I have many BPII traits.
I have been following Lamictal responses on this board for a while now & the reaction to it (rash not with-standing) seems almost universally positive. It seems especially helpful for the depressive phase of BP.
There's no reason why you shouldn't talk to yr doc about a trial!
Good luck.J.

Katrina-
I have found Lamictal to be a very helpful addition to my meds- its activating qualities have definitely helped lift my energy and depression.
Here are a couple of previous posts I submitted on my experience:
