Celexa vs. Serzone?

Posted by Nathan on June 9, 2001, at 8:45:49

I am trying to decide whether to start Celexa or Serzone (I have samples of each). I have been on Zoloft and Buspar for three years and stopped about a month ago (by tapering). I felt I was too complacent/apathetic and "puffy" on the combo. Since then I have lost 20 pounds, my depression has returned, and worst of all, I have zero sex drive. Also, my sleep is terrible. I usually wake up at 4:00 am from a vivid dream and can't get back to sleep. I never feel refreshed either. Could anyone who has tried either or both of these meds please share your experience. Thanks.

Nathan,

I have tried both celexa and serzone and I hate to tell you this you will probably have to try both to see. I found celexa to be very smooth and calming some people are agitated by it. I felt more clear and less foggy on clexa. Start low....break pills in half. Serzone made me feel fogged up. Do search on this site on serzone...I think John L. has the best advice start low and slowly go up because the right dosage window is small. As far as sex goes serzone caused me anorgasmia which it is not supposed to but did. Celexa caused some desensitizing but I could still perform and even though climax took longer the ride seemed more enjoyable than other ssri's.

Hope that helps.

Gil

I found Celexa to have less side effects than many other ADs. I used it only 4 weeks and should have stayed on 20 mg longer. I went to 30 mg which was agitating. However, Serzone was very agitating to me after a couple of weeks. I had crying jags and the worse insomnia ever. I think I would try the Celexa, but give it time and proceed slowly. [Just my opinion I would try Celexa; it works for more people than Serzone].

Joy,

Thanks for your insight. How did the Celexa affect your sex drive and sleep?

Nathan,
I wasn't really on it long enough to know for sure, but I remember it not having bad side effects at 20 mg. The lowest dose of any AD you can take is the best; always less side effects that way. I would try 10 mg and then 20 mg of Celexa and see if it works, but give it at least 6 weeks. Good luck.
