Depakote Question

Posted by Mr.Scott on July 11, 2001, at 10:02:14

Is gaining weight and taking depakote part and parcel?

Is it pretty much a given?

Sorry, yes. The good news is it's not as bad as Zyprexa. I always get the step up your exercise and eat less lecture, yeah right. Good luck, and I wish I could be more positive, judy

It's common, but not universal. I took Depakote for several months and although it didn't do me any good, I at least didn't suffer any side effects (including weight gain).

No gain for me, tho my doc put the fear of god in me before I went on it. I figured I would need to 'live' at the club. I have read that regular physical exercise, duh! is very good, but it is also very hard for us beepers to keep at it. Depakote has kind of helped me...I am a work in progress...good luck.

Mr. Scott

I gained about 20 lbs on 500mg/day. It didn't keep on going up though. When I stopped it the weight went slowly back down about 20 lbs. I have read in some Neurology journal a few months ago that mentioned Depakote causing a "metabolic syndrome" of weight gain-cognitive slowing, etc. I wonder if you got a little T4 added to it if that would counter it and reduce cycling further??
