SSRIs all specify "avoid alcohol" in their patient
instructions. Is this just to avoid liability?
If you plan on doing nothing but veg some evening,
is there anything wrong with a glass of wine with
dinner? Or is there some negative synergy between
the two that is dangerous?

SSRI + Alcohol can have a synergistic CNS depressant effect such that you would not wake up afterward.

I don't know if there has been a study on this subject, the risk of serious injury also increases due to the lowered seizure threshold induced by alcohol.
