Light Box Update

Posted by Noa on October 15, 2001, at 14:06:06

I have been using my light box every morning now for a few weeks, and I am noticing significant improvement in my ability to wake up in the morning. I am also not craving naps as I was a few weeks ago.

As far as my mood, I don't notice a difference, but I didn't expect one from the light treatment.

Thanks to those who shared their light box input with me.

Hi Noa,

I read earlier about SusanC mentioning something about others thinking you are using the light box to help grow something. I am getting ready for the mid-November start of my seasonal major depression and I am going to put together a light box and try that myself (with some Wellbutrin, fingers crossed!), now I wonder if it might also be helpful to use the light box to grow something interesting and beautiful while it is used to improve your own mood. I am thinking about wintertime tomatoes or other vegetables.
thanks (indirectly) for the idea!

Mitch

Noa,
I am so glad to hear the light box is working for you. Having energy can make such a big difference, even with a depressed mood. Any time I have had an increase in energy, there seems to be a fringe benefit in feeling better generally.

Good luck!

Noa, Even though there's no shortage of sunlight in Texas, I've been thinking of getting a light box for a long time. I sleep constantly on days off, vacations, etc.
When I'm forced out (work) among others, they probably don't have a clue I'm depressed.
Very frustrating. Don't think it's depression as much as lack of light. I really don't know which it is!!

Mitch--you made me laugh--thanks. Now, I too am thinking about what I can grow! Something that only needs about 30 minutes a day of the bright light (don't want to over use the expensive light bulbs).

BTW--One of the advantages of an "official" light box for light therapy is that it filters out UV rays and has a diffuser screen.

Sar--thanks. My mood hasn't been that bad, really. Actually, it's been pretty ok over the past few months. But in recent weeks I do feel pretty stressed. Work has been very challenging and hard to keep up with (others here are complaining about it too) and with all the scary crap going on out there, I've been "taxed" in coping with the anger, fear, sadness etc. I guess I feel more "reactive" in the past few weeks, and anxious, and a little depressed but the depression is very transient. But the light definitely helps with the winter sluggishness part. Now, I need to get myself back into the gym on a more frequent basis. I've only been averaging about once every two weeks--definitely not enough to see mood benefits.

Phil--the good thing about the light box manufacturers/distributers is that many of them have trial periods/liberal return policies/guarantees, so you can see if it makes a difference. I guess you can contact them and ask if you can try it out to see if it would help you.
