I am switching from Remeron to Celexa....I would like to know what to expect (ie. side effects). Thanks for the help. Alexxus

Start low (10 mg for a week or 2)then go to 15 mg for a week, then 20. This will make the side effects easier to take. They include daytime tiredness, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, sexual. For me the side effects were not as bad as with Prozac and they went away after a couple of months. The only side effect that lasted was sexual but I take Ginkgo which reverses that side effect.

In March or April of 2002, a refined Celexa should be on the market which has less side effects. It's called escitalopram but I don't know what the brand name will be.

For the first couple of weeks, I had weird fears, but they went away.

The side effects that lasted for me were increased sweating and tiredness - I take wellbutrin to help with the latter.

You might want to check the archive - there's lots of stuff on Celexa there.

As we say here, YMMV (your mileage may vary), but for me, Celexa caused nausea during the start-up, but this disappeared after a week. It has some loss of sex drive, but not nearly as bad as Paxil was. It does interfere with my sleep cycle (oddly enough, given your post, my doc augments with low-dose Remeron to counteract this). I have gained waeight, but cannot be certain if this is Celexa or Remeron.

All in all, I find it a fairly easily tolerated medication and extremely effective. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Dave

Hey there -

I've been on Celexa (10 mgs./day) for GAD and panic attacks for just over two weeks and have decided to discontinue use immediately... I've experienced a HUGE amount of anxiety and strange sensations that I've found unnerving (as usual, these sensations are almost impossible to put into words and describe effectively). I also have been taking Xanax on an as needed basis (which has been very rarely), however, I find that I am now taking up to 1 mg. a day to relax - and that barely has an effect (normally that much would have put me immediately to sleep...)

I had great success with Paxil. The only reason I discontinued was for weight gain. If my panic symptoms don't subside, I'd be willing to put up with that, as I was truly panic-free on this medication.

Of course, personal responses will vary to each and every medication. Celexa may be a wonder drug for you, I know it has been for others!

Good Luck,
Daniel

I'm taking both and am grateful that I feel better! I don't like the weight gain which I think is mostly from the Remeron. I had weird fears at first too, but that last a couple of days and now are totally gone. They really helped.
