star-D and citalopram?

Posted by JohnX on October 21, 2001, at 16:21:58

Why start with cytalopram in this
star-D program? I hope this
is this because of its lack of
interactions with other meds, and
not Forest Labs marketing/sales team
which throws extravagant parties for
psychiatrists (according both to my pdoc
and a close pharmacist friend).

John,

I think they might have chosen it because it has less affinity for the other receptors (NE/DA) that the other SSRI's have. That way, it does't look as "blurred" with the other non-SSRi options.

I think this question was answered in part in the "Treatment Resistant Depression" presentation. Two of the reasons given:

1. Citalopram will soon come of patent
protection for lower cost.

2. Citalopram has an advantage over fluoxetine
in that its shorter half-life allows for
faster switching to new medications.
