Replaced Risperdal with Nortrip. (Pamelor)

Posted by Shar on October 19, 2001, at 17:04:28

Saw the pdoc today, gave up risperdal a while ago due to motor problems, he considered geodon and one other new med, then said nortrip would probably be best. It is about as good as geodon if it does work for you, he said, and it has been around forever so there is a generic (cheaper version).

Since there is no way to afford a new med, I agreed. The rx was $7.34 for 30. That I can afford.

Starting on 25 mg for one week, then up to 50 mg for one week and check in. I check in any time there is a problem, and he is very responsive over the phone.

For some reason I have an unreasonable fear of tricyclics. We'll see I guess.

I've taken 100 mg/day of Nortriptyline for a few years now. The biggest problem I have is with dry mouth. I went through all of the "new" meds and never found anything effective. My father responded to amitrityline and took it safely for 25 years.

IMHO TCA's in many ways are a lot safer than the modern alternatives. Loko at the threads here about side effects and withdrawl problems caused by SSRI's, Effexor, etc. There is rarely a complaint from the people on TCA's.

Take the Nortriptyline with confidence but be aware that it has a theraputic window. You may have to play with your dosage to find the dose that gives you the most relief. Your doctor should be able to help in this respect with blood tests to help you target that level you will need.

Best of Luck - it works.

While on the subject of tricyclics, has anyone ever tried Limbitrol? Or Etrafon/Triavil?

ADgirl, thanks for your response. Looks like we can go through this initial phase at the same time, and compare notes.

Chris: You did not have any drop in libido? Or huge amounts of weight gain? Have you ever had a serum level check (blood test)? You can tell I am not excited about this drug.

Shar,

No Libido problems compared to the SSRI's I had been trying. Paxil was the worst on me. At least on Nortrip I am capable of performing and when my wife and I are in loving moods there is no problem.

As for the weight gain, I had gained so much on Zyprexa that I didn't notice anything extra from the Nortrip. I am now losing a lot of that initial gain. It is slow but it can be done while taking these two in tandem.

Hope it works for you,
Chris

I was reading up on nortriptyline and one of the potential side effects listed was BLACK TONGUE !!! What the heck is THAT??????????

I don't have a lot of self-esteem around my looks now, and I don't think a black tongue will help the issue!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know about this??

Shar,

Good news and bad news. The good news is that it is not dangerous and easily controlled. The bad news is that it isn't pretty. It is usually called "Black Hairy Tongue." Try these pages :

I hope you don't get this side effect.

Thank you for the info and links! I looked at them, and they are actually not as bad as what I had envisioned. Whew! I was really worried there!

I am hoping also that this particular side effect doesn't find me.

These are some of the sites I found as well...

Last winter, right around the time I started Depakote, the edges of my tongue turned dark. My tongue felt like I had bitten it, (but like it was swollen and sore all over) but because of the location, I would have bitten the front too if I had had a seizure and bitten my tongue....The darkness has faded, and after seeing the dentist recently, he says I am healthy...To come in next time it happens to have him look at it...That like these sites say, 'black tongue'is a 'bloom' of bacteria. I got a tongue scraper that keeps the top of my tongue cleaner. No one was concerned.

I am curious to know if anyone has seen this as a SE of Depakote? I reassured to see the posts here...once again, confirming my steadfast belief that this site is really a cross roads of information on the things that concern me. Thank you.

I actually got this with a couple of a.d.'s. One was Zoloft, and the other Serzone. I was Dx'd with "Thrush" though, which is a fungal infection.
Anti-fungal med cleared it up in a few days, but I had to stop taking the psych meds.

My doc explained it is possible a few psych meds may have effects on the immune system, and he had come across others (and I have seen others on here also) develop throat infections, flu, colds, etc quite quickly while starting or on a certain a.d. I guess it's all particular how our individual immune systems respond.
