Hi I started Effexor XR 7 days ago at 37.5 mgs. As soon as I started I felt a noticible difference...not irritable, happier, calmer. I love it. Im supposed to double the dosage after 7 days to 75 mg. but I really dont want to because I've been reading of the horrific withdrawals from it and figure the less, the better. Is it ok to stay on the 37.5 mgs if I feel good and will I have those horrific withdrawals once I DO go off? (and how WOULD I decrease the 37.5 dosage? Im taking capsules so I cant cut them in half.)

Lex-
From reading other people's posts at this site, it sounds like a lot of the nightmarish withdrawal scenarios come from quitting Effexor cold-turkey. Either way, 75mg is a relatively low dose according to the makers of Effexor, but it's generally a bad idea to change the amount of medication you take without first consulting the doctor who prescribed it.PT

Hi. Glad to hear you're having some success with FXR. There is some literature that links dose & length of treatment with discontinuation fx severity. I have seen anecdotal evidence though, that would support that some folks regardless of doseage or length of treatment have little or no problem stopping FXR while others have a terrible time. Cam & others here have presented some theories about why this is. (Something about fast metabolizers I think.) I fortunately had virtually no problems discontinuing FXR XR after taking 300mg/day for a little over a year. I did however taper slowly & added Prozac the last few days of my stopping FXR. If you feel like you are getting an acceptable response at a low dose talk with your doc about staying at 37.5mg. It is not unheard of to do this. The only down side might be that you could feel even better at a higher dose. Take care. Good luck
