First AD experience bad with Wellbutrin SR

Posted by dragginfly on March 18, 2002, at 2:55:15

I've found 'normality' through hormone regulation -- first birth control
pills, then Depo-Provera, both of which alleviate what I can only describe as
24/7 PMS -- and a few years of counseling. I still had low-level depression, though.
I finally decided to try an anti-depressant medication.
My GP put me on Wellbutrin SR 150. Five days of no effects, one week
of extreme exhaustion, then finally I began to feel 'myself' on Day 13
... and on Day 16 had an allergic reaction (hives, itching,
my whole face blew up like a balloon). What now?

The best effect of the WB, once it kicked in, was to keep me from being angry.
Now that I'm off it again, I realize that's my normal operative mode:
just-below-the-surface anger more than despair or sadness. Should I try another AD?

Maybe you were allergic to a filler in the pill or the food coloring and not the medicine itself. You can switch to the IR version (immediate release pills) as an alternative. Just a thought. Although it seems odd that the allergic reaction occured so late?

The filler theory sounds likely, from what I've read. 16 days into the course isn't really that unusual, either, from what I've found online ... but now I'm finding another side effect which (if you're a male John) you might not relate to: it seems to make the menstrual cycle worse. I did notice three days after going off it, I got cramps -- and I'm on Depo-Provera, so I usually have no cycle at all. Last thing I need is that! So I'm thinking another med might be better for me.

I found that i got hives from the SR mechanism, however, I do fine on the straight stuff. ask your doctor about it. you will have to take a weaker strength more often throughout the day, but no hives. look on the internet. there is an explanation of why the SR can produce allergic reactions.
