Dr. Kramer: additonal BZD question

Posted by johnj on April 2, 2002, at 21:56:28

Thanks for your responses they are very enlightening. I will talk to my pdoc about the Tranxene taper. My question is something that has eluded me in the past. I began my depression with a major panic attack followed by major depression. 50 mgs of pamelor and lithobid, plus the tranxene. Is the tranxene for anxiety and help with sleep? I just wonder if the tanxene helps with anxiety, but "boggs" me down in the depression arena. It is so hard to tell personally if my anxiety and depression move together or separately. Sometimes I am not sure which is which! Or are there other BZD's that don't last so long in the body? I do like your suggestion about ambien or sonata. I do wonder if attacking the sleep and depression separately or together is better. Again, how much they are related and how is confusing. Thank you, this is really helpful to get a pro's insight not only on my own, but other people's concerns too.

Yes, I'd guess the intention of the Tranxene is to help with sleep and anxiety. I've never been impressed that BZD's are a problem with depression, but some docs are concerned about that. There are LOTS of different BZD's and they all have different half-lives, so talk to your doc about whether a different one would be worth a try.

Be well.
