I have been on a monophasic birth control pill, actives pills only, so I am not supposed to have periods(or PMS!). But since adding depakote (My gyn thinks this is the culprit anyway) about 3 months ago I have had some break thru bleeding. And then two weeks ago, I just started bleeding excessively with clots, but no cramping. I am beginning to really get weak now. Walking to the mailbox makes me out of breath, and I am in good shape.
Gdoc wants to do labs, esp depakote level. But I am only on 250 mgs/day of the dep. Is this small amount enough to mess with my BCP?
Has anyone else on depakote and the BCP experienced this increased menstrual bleeding or break thru bleeding?
Any info or experiences would help alot.
Thanks
Chloe

Ok, my Gdoc wants to put me on a higher dose birth control pill, or so I heard from her nurse on my answering machine. I am not keen on this. I don't want to try another rounds of pills. She basically thinks I need more estrogen to keep me from bleeding. Does anyone have any experience with Evening Primrose Oil (and Gamma Linolenic Acid)? What dose? Any bad effects? I am taking 1-2 tbs flaxseed oil(primarily Linoleic acid) and having great benefit...Please, anyone with info on Evening primrose oil?
Thanks

Hi Chloe,You might get your *platelet* levels checked. Depakote can lower those. I had some trouble with bruising when I was taking 500mg/day a couple of years ago. I am on 250mg at bedtime now and haven't noticed any bruising thus far. Also, are you taking any aspirin or NSAID's regularly? Those will add to the anticoagulant effect of the Depakote. I bought a bottle of Evening Primrose oil with SAMe several weeks ago, but never opened it. I did some quick searching around in response to your question and some kids with ADHD often do well with a three-way combo of Fish Oil, Flax Oil, and Evening Primrose Oil (just 1 cap each/day). *Some* have been able to get their kids off meds and just on the supplements. What the heck, I will add the Primrose (1 cap) to my Flax Oil (2 caps) today and start taking it. I would like to find some of the enteric coated fish oil today-when I go into town. Then I will swap out 1 cap of Flax for 1 cap of the Fish Oil and give the three way Omega-3 oils a try. Oh, BTW, the SAMe I am taking (200mg AM), I think is making me a little hypomanic. Usually, just 125mg of Dep. at bedtime will keep me asleep just fine, but not NOW! :-)
