lamictal withdrawal

Posted by Roo on May 1, 2002, at 11:01:54

I am thinking of d/c'ing my lamictal b/c of
sleep problems and weight gain. Has anyone on
this board gone off lamictal--if so, did you taper
(and how slowly) or experience any withdrawal symptoms.

I have never been on it, but I found information on it.

The web page I found was at:
http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_lamictal.pdf

You may need to download adobe acrobat reader to read the file if you don't already have it. You can download Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.05 at:

Hi Roo,
I just came off of Lamcital a few weeks ago. I tapered very quickly -- I was taking 75 mg. I took 50 mg one night, 25 mg the next night, then cold turkey. My pdoc said since Lamictal has a short "half life" it is out of your system quickly.

I'm not sure if I suffered withdrawal symptoms or not -- the first week I was off it I was very volatile -- more agitated and fatigued than normal. But I wasn't sure if it was from coming off of the Lamictal, or from just not being on any med to help the mood swings.

Either way, I'm fine now. Maybe a slower taper would have been smarter, but it wasn't a big deal at all.

Good luck! Sorry about the bloating. It's horrible, isn't it? Take care,

cindy

How long did it take being off lamictal for the
water weight to come off? Yeah, between that and
the sleeplessness and it not really helping all
THAT much, I don't think it's for me. I have almost
decided I would rather have the sexual side effects
of the SSRI's than the weight gain of the lamictal
(15 extra pounds doesn't have me feeling so sexy).

Hi Roo,
The bloating stopped as soon as I returned to my original dosage of 75 mg. (It started when I increased up to 125 mg).

Good luck -- I hope you feel better soon. Perhaps just a lower dose of Lamictal can still help you without the bloating? (For me, though, I wasn't being helped much at 75).

Take care, cindy
