Long-term Paxil depressed, what meds to try next?

Posted by Pattisun on May 5, 2002, at 21:29:56

I've been using Klonopin for 7 years (panic disorder), Paxil for 6 years (mild depression and anxiety--although it didn't really help the anxiety). Last year I was able to cut my Paxil dosage in half down to 10 mg/day, but couldn't stop it past that on my own. I have cut my Klonopin down to .75/mg day. Now I am noticing I am definitely suffering from depression. I am seeing a psychiatrist next week and wondering what meds she may try on me. I am NOT very trusting of doctors or meds. I'd like to slowly completely taper off of Klonopin and see if I can manage my panic disorder without meds. And, I'd like to stop Paxil but I obviously need something to help with the depression. I'd like something with less side effects and a easier withdrawal than Paxil.

I'll let you know what this doctor tells me when I see her next Monday. Wish me luck!!

Patti

First and foremost, GOOD LUCK!

My original meds were the same as yours - Paxil and Klonopin long-term.

I stopped Paxil (it pooped out on me and may even have induced mild mania) and have gotta tell you that if you DO decide to go off it, PLEASE, PLEASE do so VERY slowly and gradually. Paxil is known for terrible withdrawal, which I unfortunately went through because my pdoc took me off it waaaaaay too fast.

Even though you're only on 10 mg/day of Paxil (I was on 30mg/day), I would still say to cut it in half to 5 mg/day and remain on that for quite some time before stopping it completely.

Again, good luck to you! :-)
