Which 1st -AD or Mood Stab.?(attn: JohnX2, Fachad)

Posted by Janelle on May 8, 2002, at 2:20:42

Awhile ago buried in a thread that I have not been able to find it in going through the archives, someone (I think it might have been JohnX2 or Fachad) said that for people with BiPolar2, you should either be on an AD first and then add a Mood Stabilizer or the other way around - have the Mood Stabilizer aboard (that's how the person phrased it - they used the word "aboard") and then add the AD.

Which is the optimal order for someone with BP2? Thanks!

Ideally, start with decent dose of mood stabilizer and slowly add on
an AD.

I don't have much experience with adding mood stabilizers on after
the AD. But I see no reason why they wouldn't work. You may find you
need to alter your AD regimen in response to the mood stabilizer result.

Take it easy,
John

Someone, I could swear it was you or Fachad, had said kind of in passing in a thread I had posted who knows when to have a mood stablizer "on board" first and then add the AD (or the other way around!) - was it you - do you recall using that word "on board"?!!

Hi Janelle. Bipolars should be put on an mood stabilizer first then after you are stable an anti-depressant can be added. If you start the anti-depressant first you risk going into a manic phase. Dr. Goldberg personally told me that he prefers his bipolar patients to be on 2 different mood stabilizers before adding an anti-depressant. Anti-depressants can really wreck havoc with our moods.

Thanks for the great, helpful response! :-) (nm) » rainbowlight
