Pstims and preemployment drug tests

Posted by BLPBart on May 14, 2002, at 22:14:00

I have just been offered my dream job which requires that I go through a pre-employment physical which includes a drug test. i am currently taking 40 mg/day dexedrine SR along with wellbutrin 300 SR mg/day for depression and ADD. Even though I can show the doctor my prescription for these medications, I'm still paranoid about amphetamine showing up in my blood test. I'm considering just not taking the dexedrine until I have the test but I don't know how long it stays in your system and is detectable. My doc says it wears off in 10-12 hours, but I'm not sure if that would be the same as it being detectable. Has anyone been through this and if so, what are your thoughts?

When you take a drug screen they have you fill out a form that includes listing all medications that you have been taking. Make sure you list EVERYTHING... vitamins, over-the-counter, everything. Then if they come up with a positive screen they have to compare it against what you have listed. I suppose they may request a note from your Dr. if they are concerned about the amphetamines.

I don't know the law, but if you have a Dr. prescription for a medication I don't think they can hold that against you in a pre-employment drug screen. I think that might fall into the category of ADA discrimination. My husband says that if you fail a pre-employment screen, they are required by law to give you another chance because of the risk of false positives.

I'm having some medical tests and have to be off my ritalin (or any stimulant) for a week. I have the feeling that's overkill, but that's what they said.

Thanks for your responses. I realize I'm being very paranoid about the blood test since I have to tell them I'm taking it anyway. I just want to get this whole thing over with.
