Well my diagnosis was recently changed back to atypical depression and Ive been placed on the MAOI Parnate. Im currently on 30 mg Parnate. I ramped it up fast from 0 mg to 30 mg in three days. Im very dizzy and "out of it" feeling. Very activated and stimulated, but super dizzy. Im sticking to the MAOI diet conservatively.
One thing I have noticed on the Parnate is I seem to be able to think a little bit more clearly. Like my thoughts are more "clear" and I dont have molasses brain or something like I usually feel like. I usually feel like Im in a haze or semi-haze or mental fog. Maybe the Parnate will help that some.
I plan on taking the MAOI to the max, going above 60 mg if I need to.

Eric, didn't you have problems with Parnate before..with the blood pressure stuff? How is that working out now? Also...what about Nardil..have you every considered that as an alternative?
Best wishes..

Eric
Glad you're still around. Give the Parnate a good 3-4 weeks. I had insomnia (3 hours sleep) and anxiety attacks for the first 10 days, then calm and warmth--suddenly, like flipping a switch.
I've found that the various phases of atypical depression can be shifted solely by manipulating hours of sleep. I believe atypical depression mimics bipolar conditions and gets mistaken for them.
Don't know if you remember, but I tried Stablon (tianeptine), serotonin re-uptake enhancer, in Summer 2000. It brought irritability and oversleeping that was associated with my winter phase. This leads me to believe that atypical depression is some derangement of serotonin receptors, not helped by SSRIs or re-uptake inhibitors.
A new drug called Ariza (gepirone) from Organon, was due to be released this year, but is the latest victim of FDA foot-dragging. Related to buspirone, it hits more powerfully on 5-HT 1A, without the mild blocking on D2. Nearly half of atypicals responded to it in one study (poss. unpublished data). Interest in this drug for atypicals has been bouncing around almost as long as this drug has been in research (1985!).
Good luck with the Parnate, Eric. Glad you haven't given up. It's hard.

> JayYeah Jay, initially I had problems with my BP but that was cause I went off the MAOI diet too soon. This time its totally different. My BP is actually much better on Parnate, its dropped tremendously since being on it. All you have to do is be self disciplined and follow the MAOI diet. Since Im a self disciplined kind of guy, this is not a problem for me.
So far the biggest problem on Parnate has been the dizziness and lightheadedness from the orthostatic hypotension side effect. It also creates a lot of insomnia, which Ive never experienced before on antidepressants.
Basically its kind of like speed. Not a bad antidepressant at all so far. Its really improved my concentration and focus.

My doctor suggested taking it three times a day instead of twice. I take my first dose when I wake, the second dose three hours later, and then the third three hours after that. I spread it out but keep if from being too close to bed time. It's worked great that way for me and I take 100mg.
