Nardil, Drowsiness and Insomnia!

Posted by KellyM on August 4, 2002, at 3:36:48

I'm a new Nardil User, and if you have read any of my posts you know that I'm doing very well on it. The main side effect I'm having right now is a very paradoxical effect of daytime drowsiness with insomnia at night. Usually I can sleep 3-5 hours with the help of Klonopin before I wake up. Sometimes I take a little more Klonopin to get back to sleep. Don't know how my doctor will feel about using the Klono that way, but I figure you have to do with what gets you by. Last Thursday, when I worked a 4 to midnight shift I took two naps before going to work (I got something like 4-5hours of sleep) then had a dose or two of Nardil during that day.

So far the best method I have found to counter the drowsiness during the day is to take one pill several hours apart. If I take two or more at a time, I get extremely tired. I have been experimenting with dose time and amount trying to find the best combo. Tonight I took two pills at bed time and fell asleep fine, although after four hours I'm up again. Has anyone ever taken 60mg of Nardil at a time? Maybe if I just do this at bed time, I can forget about the daytime problems. Any experencies welcomed.

Have you tried just taking it at night? Some people get a paradoxical reaction and take it at night, and it works fine. You might wake up raring to go and wouldn't that be cool!
When I was put on Nardil I was warned that this is not unusual and just see how it worked for me, that people react differently. As it happened I liked a pot of coffee and two Nardils for an eye opener, then I went like a rabbit all day. And slept really well. Part of that may have been not being depressed though.
You may continue to adjust to the drug- I don't know how long you've been on it. Insomnia is a common side effect of MAOIs and I had to use Ambien to sleep for months. As long as you aren't upping the total Klonopin dose taking it at night shouldn't be a big deal. You need more than five hours of sleep though. A sleep deficit will mess you up, either by mania or just ill health. You really need to work this out with the doc, and if your appt. isn't soon a call may be in order. Healing from depression goes better with your sleep cycle in whack.
I'm so glad you're doing well.

I have tried taking it at night, and I fall asleep fine. The problem is I still wake up 2-4 hours later and can't get back to sleep. The Klonopin definitely helps, but it seems to be fairly short acting as well. I totally agree about getting enough sleep. I'm going back to my doctor soon, and maybe I can get some ambien or something else that will last more that a few hours at a time.

On the positive side, I think taking one pill at least four hours apart negates the drowsiness at daytime. Kind of a pain taking it four times a day, but it works. Maybe taking all of it at night with something that really keeps me asleep will be the best answer. Thanks for your kind words.

I was on Nardil for about 9 months and then Parnate for over 4 years, nearly 5 years ago. I am currently trying to tolerate the Parnate once again and am in the early stages of dosing. I do not suffer from depression and take instead for panic disorder/agoraphobia.
All the MAOI's mess with your sleep, the amount and type of sleep you get at night. I remember in particular having what I would call "narcolepsy attacks" on the Nardil during the day. These instense naps could not be resisted. I'll never forget going with my sister-in-law to go shopping and by the time we got there I decided to stay in the car and sleep - and sleep I did - I couldn't NOT do it.
I'm only on 5 mgs of Parnate right now (need to get up to at least 40mg) and have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. I sleep in 4 hr. cycles. I'm hoping that in time I will get used to it or it will decrease in intensity. The good part though is that I don't feel the lack of sleep and am alert and full of energy during the day.
Good Luck, hope you find the right formula.
