Atarax is an ancient antihistamine that was occasionally used for anxiety years ago but it's been largely replaced by more effective drugs with fewer side effects. i was prescribed some for itching due to poison ivy last summer. it is incredibly sedating -- i was less anxious cos it knocked me out and i feel asleep after each dose ;-)

Ancient is right - it's been on the market for ages. It might knock out some people but it did nothing for me one way or another. Barely effective for anxiety. Don't bother with it.

Actually, Vistaril (hydroxyzine pamoate) is the form of hydroxyzine that is effective for mild anxiety (Atarax is hydroxyzine hydrochloride). I've tried them both, and there definitely is a discernible difference-- the Atarax didn't even make me drowsy (but then, I tend to find Benadryl stimulating.....), but the Vistaril did what it was supposed to do. I'm sure it wouldn't have lasted long though... these days hydroxyzine is used much more as pre-operative anxiety medication for patients who can't receive benzos or barbs.
