Effexor w/drawal long over-now joint problems

Posted by Dysfunk on March 22, 2003, at 17:48:35

I remember reading this early on in the year and can't seem to find it again. I read that some people were saying that they felt Effexor caused arthritic conditions long after they finished it. I would like to hear from you again.

I have been off Effexor for 2 months and suddenly I have a condition in my ankle. Tests have not come in yet, but it could possibly a form of arthritis. My doctor says it appears to be Lime Disease, but I live in NYC-it is highly unlikely.

Please tell me if you are having problems long after withdrawal from Effexor. Thanks.

Yup!!! I understand that many people come off of Effexor with no problems (my Mom is one of them). Unfortunately, that was not the case for me. I started with achey knees and neck as I was tapering off and have had 8 months of muscle knots and pain in my neck shoulders and back since. But the knee pain went away within a couple of weeks-- I hope the ankle problems will clear up for you. Acupuncture helps for immediate pain releif but it only lasts for a few days. I've had good results with NADH and a cal/mag/zinc supplement, with the added benefit of easing PMDD symptoms---but I've only taken those supplements for under a month, so I don't know how long this will work. SAM-e worked well for a while but then pooped out and made me cranky and scattered.

I wish I could help you more with this, I'm really interested to know more about long-term withdrawal effects. Thanks so much for raising the subject!

Though I haven't heard of joint pain as one of the withdrawal symptoms, I have heard of many other symptoms that both surprised and debilitated suffers from trying to quit Effexor.

There is something you can do. File a report with the FDA. They regulate Effexor (which is made by Wyeth Laboratories Inc. in Philadelphia.). Help the next generation of Effexor users to be better informed by doctors and the manufacturer. You can submit a complaint to the FDA online at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/
The more people that report this problem, the better response we will get. You can also call in your complaint to an FDA state office (here are each state’s telephone number)
http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html
You can also sign the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/effexor/petition.html
Finally: Note - This is not medical or legal advice, it is only my opinion based on experience and research.

If I am sure my ankle pain is related to Effexor, I might file a complaint. I could not convince my doctor that my back ache and neck pain were side effects/withdrawal symptoms at the time and it really pissed me off when I got on this site and confirmed it. Thanks for the info.

Beastress:

Thank you for your feedback. I am trying to get an appt with a Rheumatologist to find out more about my ankle. The podiatrist is stumped why the swelling and pain are on the inside, with no evidence of trauma on the outside. When I have the time I have to search the 2002 archives for something someone said I think about getting rheumatoid arthritis after taking Effexor.

Are you sure the muscle aches were related to Effexor? I am absolutely sure about the back and neck pains, but not sure about my ankle pain.

I will try acupuncture if this continues. I don't want to continue to take pain killers.
