New to the site but very glad I found it...
Started with a new doc due to insurance change this week. I have suffered from OCD, Panic & Depression since I can remember, I'm nearing 30 now :). I was on 80mg. Prozac and 0.5 mg. of Ativan 2 times a day. The Prozac stopped working for me a long time ago and previous Doc told me "It was all in my mind". Well, Duh! Of course it is, that's why I was seeing you, you crazy bi... Anyway, the new Doc wants me to go on Effexor XR but she wants me to take it with the Prozac to taper off. So, instead of 4 Prozac a day, first week 3 and 1 Effexor XR, second week 2 and one, etc.
My question is simply this: I've read as much as I can about Effexor XR from both medical sites and from folks that have been on it. In my reading, I've seen that Prozac mixed with it can be very dangerous. Should I even attempt to try this cocktail and wait to see what happens or should I chalk this up to another Doc who is owned by the drug companies? (She handed me an Effexor XR sample pack on the way out, her entire office was full of drug company 'perks') I was supposed to start the new cocktail today, but I've very hesitant. She also uped my Ativan to 1 mg 4 times a day, which she said would help with the Effexor XR side effects (another thing I am TERRIFIED about, seeing one of my obsessions is vomiting and nausea!) Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rhiannon

Hi Rhianne,
Yes you can take Prozac and Effexor at the same time, I did this to taper off Effexor. I haven't heard about it being done the other way round but it shouldn't be a problem, but then i am not a doctor, so always check even if you ask a different doctor.
As for the Ativan increase, that stuff is addictive and i would be really pissed off if my doc increased the dose that I had to take, its just asking for serious trouble.
Sorry but if she has all these drug compnay perks in her office then she is obviously very into giving out the ones that will get her the best return or something. I hate the way docs do this. maybe thats why she increased your ativan cos she gets more 'perks' the longer you stay on Effexor!?
