I heard that bcl-2 is a 'good' neuroprotective
protein, and that lithium raises it.
does high 'expression' of the bcl-2 gene
mean high levels of this neuroprotective
protein. I'm just trying to interpret the
meaning of a gingko biloba study.
Thanks

Yes. Here's a good definition:
"expression: The cellular production of the protein encoded by a particular gene. The process includes transcription of DNA, processing of the resulting mRNA product and its translation into an active protein. N.B. A recombinant gene inserted into a host cell by means of a vector is said to be expressed if the synthesis of the encoded polypeptide can be demonstrated." [IUPAC Bioinorganic, IUPAC Compendium]
-That should explain expression, transcription, and translation; you'll see those three terms used regularly. As a side note, I don't believe that increased bcl-2 activity is responsible for lithium's efficacy in bipolar disorder; its inhibitory effects on protein kinase C (PKC) alpha are probably much more important.
