please help, urinary tract problems

Posted by wendy b. on March 31, 2003, at 14:23:26

i just got this weird f_ing call from my family medicine practice, they're referring me on to a dr who specializes in dialysis. evidently there were more white blood cells and also protein and red bl cells in the urine sample i brought them last wednesday; i had been on Cipro for a week to treat a UTI and still didn't feel any better. then my doctor was out thurs and fri, so i only just found out and trying very hard not to freak the hell out until he calls me back --- i have no idea what any of this means........

any nurses or other health-care individuals out there? sorry this isn't about mental health in general, but my stress level is high, so i'll slip it in anyway, and ask for your indulgence. please reply if you have any knowledge about these things.

thank you in advance,

Wendy

You can find all those *things* in your urine when you have a UTI. UTI's can imply a bladder or kidney infection, both or one. I assume they did a culture. Find out what *bug* you were growing. They also do a sensitivity to determine what antibx to use. Maybe the Cipro isn't what you need. Bladder infections cause alot of the burning and frequency symptoms. Kidney infections tend to make you feel really awful all over with some back and flank pain, too. It is not unusual for a GP to refer you to a urologist (bladder and assorted tubing) or nephrologist (kidney and assorted parts), particularly if you have frequent problems with UTI's. Don't freak out about that. More testing might be needed or not. Problems (weird stuff in your urinalysis) you describe are quite frequent in females particularly. Contact the office and get more details. And DRINK WATER. Hope this helps !!!

dear sboatrn,

thank you for your quick reply. it's not the UTI that was bothering me, it was the nurse saying he was a specialist in dialysis that scared the hell out of me.
i appreciate your suggestions. like you, i thought maybe the cipro hadn't worked as well as it should, i was very uncomfortable still, so that's why i went back for a second urine dip. but the doc says the white bl cell count is much lower than the first urine sample, so he isn't prescribing more antibiotics.

many many thanks,

W.
