BPII or Dep+ Anxiety Suicide Prev. Misinfor.

Posted by SuicidePrev on April 5, 2003, at 20:11:16

Would like someone who can give me the psychopharmacological basis to argue with someone who is at risk for suicide because he/she has had a number of suicides in his/her family, has severe depression + anxiety and/or bi-polar II and has not had good success with a number of SSRIs and Effexor. He/she is now telling friends and relatives that he/she will not try any other medication because: effexor is chemcially the same a LSD (my biochem is not current enough to argue with this) and the SSRIs made him/her manic. My research indicates that if he/she is BPII (which is highly likely considering the family history) then a mood stabilizer is usually indicated. But, one step at a time: first, I need the research data on chemistry of effexor vs LSD. Thanks -- trying to prevent another suicide.

I hope somebody has something to offer, but FWIW, from what I understand LSD obviously isn't the *same* as Effexor chemically. They *do* share an affinity for the 5-HT2 receptor (as an agonist). I don't know which subtype(s). There are lots of medications (legal and illegal) that have some common mechanisms of action.
