It is not clinically advised to take Meridia (sibutramine) with Effexor (venlafaxine) or other serotonin-boosting antidepressants.
Both drugs has similar pharmacologic properties i.e., both are reuptake inhibitors of serotonin and norepinephrine.
There is a risk of serotonin syndrome. Since both has norepinephrine effect, this may also lead to a dramatic increase in your blood pressure and potential for stroke.

Since both has norepinephrine effect, this may also lead to a dramatic increase in your blood pressure and potential for stroke.I take two norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, nortriptyline and Strattera. The nortriptyline helped the depression once I got up to a therapeutic dose (75 mg/day), but I still had lots of ADHD symptoms. So I started on Strattera with good results- it has a clearing quality for the mind which attentuated the ADHD fog in my head that had remained. Since the results were further improvement each time I upped the dose my dr. decided to try 80 mg a day of Strattera ( astandard adult dose). Should I be worried about my blood pressure? My pressure was taken last week and it was normal.
