I'm also giving up on Zyprexa

Posted by NikkiT2 on July 24, 2003, at 8:07:00

After two years on Zyprexa, I've decided to give it up...

Its been succesful in that it keeps me just about free of suicidal thoughts and self harming thoughts.. but I am *so* fed up of the side effects. My weight is just going up and up and up (after losing 30lbs last year when I had a 2 months break from Zyprexa) and I just sleep and sleep and sleep.. well, I have insomnia at night, but am so sleepy all damned day and fall asleep at the drop of a hat, and find it impossible to get out of bed before midday.

So, all in all, I feel the side effects just not worth it anymore *sighs*

Hoping not to get any withdrawal, and hoping I don;t get all suicidal too quickly. I just feel I have run out of options now. I've gone through all the AD's my pdoc can prescribe me, I've gone through both typical and atypical anti psychs, and Zyprexa is the only thing that has helped me.. but I can't go through life sleeping and eating and looking like a bloody whale..

Wish me luck, and hope that Abifly comes to UK damned soon if I don't get on OK med free!!

Nikki, I wish you luck, but I have read that many experience severe insomnia when discontinuing Zyprexa. If this happens to you, I suggest that you do not let it get out of hand as sleep deprivation will exacerbate other underlying conditions. I understand how you feel about the weight gain and lethargy...it really reduces quality of life. Take care.

You might be able to use a small dose of Seroquel - maybe 50mg - to help you sleep at night while you are coming off the Zyprexa.

Good luck!

I took my last dose on Tuesday, and have actually slept BETTER since!!! For the last 3 nights I have fallen asleep within an hour of going to bed... which is veery rare for me, it nornally takes me till atleast 4am till i fall asleep.. this past 3 days I've not even got back up from going to bed!!

Very bizarre and hoping this holds out!!

Hey Nikki,

I'm doing the same thing but not as quickly. Last time I had a hard time with sleep and anxiety when I went down to nothing. I suggest taking a very small pice of Zyprexa if it gets too much all at once. Something like 2mg or less. Good luck! And hope to see you there.

Sebastian

P.S. just as a warning I couldn't eat either. What dose are you coming off of?

I'[m only coming off from 5mg... and have had NO appetite for 3 days now.. which is a VERY good thing, as weight gain reasons is a big reason for coming off Zyprexa for me..

I am actually sleeping SO much better.. its wonderful..
But.. I have been feeling lousy, fluey, for 36 hours now.. the glands in my neck are up and sore and I have general muscle aches.. I'm guessing I just have some bug, but do you think it oculd be connected to the zyprexa??

Good luck with your coming off.. I think this is a good move for me.

I had a flew too. I think its Zyprexa. I lost a little apetite. My sleep is better too. Do you eat anything, or just less. Because my problem before was not being able to eat anything, I could only drink fluid and that didn't sit well in my stomack, all the milk made me want to puke, the food I could not swallow even one bit. I got realy worried after a few days of this and called my doctor, he told me to take a 2.5mg Zyprexa and all of a sudden in about an hour I could swallow food again. Just make shore you can eat at all.
