Tiagabine (Gabitril®) isn't good for anxiety.

Posted by PlunX on July 26, 2003, at 1:17:30

I started trying Gabitril for my chronic anxiety instead of my normal Klonopin .5mg twice a day (my doctor took me off the Klonopin cold turkey and gave me some boxes of this Gabitril crap) and I still have not noticed too much of an improvement of my condition. I started with 4mg, tried 6mg, then 12mg, and even 16mg. 4mg didn't do much, 6mg made me feel odd, 12mg made me really tired, and 16mg seemed to slightly reduce anxiety but I was so exhausted that I just went to sleep for the night. I don't know why some psychiatrists are prescribing this anti-epileptic medication for anxiety disorders.. Not everything that deals with the GABA receptors means that it's going to help with anxiety. I had a rally bad benzodiazapine withdrawal because of my doctor's unwise choice, ended up in the emergency room, and now I'm back on Klonopin .5mg twice a day at a whole new MHMR service. it was bad enough for the doctor to take me off of the Klonopin cold turkey, but putting me on this Gabitril wasn't a good idea either. Everyone's different and other people might have better results, but I'm used to a small dose of Klonopin two times a day and even 6mg - 12mg of Gabitril didn't help my anxiety at all. Just wanted to share my experience, situation, and information with others. Thanks.

I tried Gabitril, too, with absolutely no success. My pdoc hates me on all these benzos (60 mg of Dalmane at night, 5mg of Xanax dailyas needed) and was hoping we could make a switch.

Thank God he's not benzo-phobic because I would probably jump out of a window without sedatives sometimes (severe, treatment resistant GAD with accomping depression).

Gabitril is a joke, in my opinion. Did absolutely NOTHING. Just MHO.

Unfortunately, my psychiatrist WAS a benzo-phobe.. Hopefully my new psychiatrist that I see next week will keep me on the Klonopin .5mg twice a day. It's worked for me for sixteen months in conjuction with Celexa 60mg and Trazodone 100mg, so I see no reason to 'fix something that isn't broken.'
