Here is a link to something I found http://www.emedicine.com/EMERG/topic318.htm
Basically it says that in the US in 1999, a total of 372 MAOI exposures were reported. Previously there had been 451 in 1996 and 618 in 1990.
Of those 372 exposures in 1999, 215 of the toxic exposures were unintentional and 102 were intentional. And a total of 21 patients were reported to have major adverse outcomes. No fatalities were noted.
The question I ask is approximately how many people were taking MAOIs in the US?
Does anyone else here have any rough idea?
Is there any other data like the page I found?

It's a good sign that the number of so-called "exposures" was so drastically reduced over the course of the nine-year period. But that might reflect the fact that much fewer people are taking MAOIs now than in 1990. I wouldn't be surprised, considering the commercial success of the SSRIs.I take Parnate, and I once read that only about 1% of the prescriptions for ADs in the U.S. are for MAOIs. Your question is a very good one. I myself would like to know how many people take Parnate or Nardil and what the trends are. I would hate to see the day when these life-saver meds are discontinued. You should do the research. I wouldn't trust a word from the drug companies themselves. I would start with an organization like the American Psychiatric Assn. or a pharmacists' association, and take it from there. Please post your findings. A lot of us would love to know.

The only data on the Net I have found is for New Zealand. The data is very thorough indeed and can be found here in this PDF document:http://healthsci.otago.ac.nz/dsm/gp/rnzcgp/Download/Anti_depress.pdf
It says only 0.5% of patients taking antidepressents were taking "ordinary" MAOIs. That is 58 patients out of the sample size of 3,494 in the study. A surprising 4% were taking reversible MAOIs. The figures are so detailed that I can't read them all and I may be getting it slightly wrong because 58 out of 3,494 is not 0.5%!
Of course prescribing habits will vary enormously from country to country and I would love to see similar data for the UK or the US. I know there are (chargeable) reports which do have this info.
Maybe someone here has seen such a thing and can tell us very roughly how many people are taking MOIs in either the UK or the US.
Anyone?
