Has anyone used Vistaril? Do you know the maximum dosage? My pdoc won't give benzos, and I'm planning to order some ativan on the internet, for prn use, but in the meantime I have vistaril, and am wondering what dose to use for a panic attack, if I feel one coming on. Thanks.

>I've taken vistaril and it really isn't very good as an antianxiety med. It's hydroxyzine pamoate...and antihistamine. I find that it's only real effect on anxiety occurs when you take enough to pretty much knock yourself out. It is quite sedating. The suggested dose for anxiety is 50-100mg 4 times daily...but if you take that much I can pretty much promise you you'll be a zombie. Tried using it for a really bad panic attack once before I got xanax and ended up taking 150mg which put me to sleep for about 4 hours and I woke up in the same panic state I was in before I went to sleep. Maybe it will work better for you, but all in all I think benedryl works just as well and is a whole lot cheaper (and doesn't leave you feeling so hung over). Best bet is to try to find a pdoc that's not afraid of benzos. Best of luck, Worrier.

I'm really sorry you have a problem with your doc regarding benzos. Why don't you find another doc or at least get some research together to "prove your point"? Klonopin has been great for me for a year and I have not had any problems. However, in my opinion, ordering meds via the 'net (from a doc - I understand) isn't a good idea at all. Even if you get the drug you asked for (and sometimes that doesn't happen), it's no better than self medicating..... without some supervision and followup. I know we all know our bodies and what works, but we also should have a PRESCRIBING person we are in contact with.
Just a prudent opinion... but it's your brain and your call. Good luck.

Find another doc. Don't order from the net - VERY BAD IDEA for multiple reasons. For one, like Dragonslayer said, you don't know what you are getting.
Besides, you would pay out the a$$ (hundreds) for something you can get for 20 or 30 bucks with a scrip from your Doc.

I have a reliable net pharmacy I have ordered from in the past and am satisfied with. The medication comes in sealed packaging of the pharmaceutical company that makes it, and the pricing is competitive. What I was referring to is ativan for prn use, meaning I would have about 30 pills around that would probably last 6 months. Of course I will be looking for another doctor, that is just a stopgap measure, in case it takes a while to find one.

I'm glad you are in the process of finding a doc who will be a better fit for you. We all deserve one who listens and treats accordingly.
