hi,
i have schizophrenia and am having problems with motivation. i just started seeing a new pdoc recently and she increased my lexapro dose from 20mg/day to 40mg/day because she thinks the lack of motivation could be do to an underlying depression. is that a normal dose? it seems really high. i also take abilify and zyprexa.
thanks.

Hi Melinda. For me, Lexapro *caused* apathy. This is not unusual with the SSRI antidepressants. However, the apathy did not appear until the third or fourth week.

40 mg is high. 30 mg is max as per the prescribing information.
Why does she think the lack of motivation is depression-related and not just a negative symtom of the schizophrenia?

i didn't ask her why she thinks the lack of motivation is a depression symptom and not a negative symptom of the schizophrenia. i'll write that on my list of questions to ask at my next appt.
thanks

I think that your pdoc is doing the right thing. 40mg is higher than the average dose but some people take that amount and it is very safe at that dose. Drugs are funny. Antidepressants might decrease motivation at a lower dose, then increase it at a higher dose. Trial and error is the only way to find out. Good luck!
