There's a definite push to force us onto generics, but I've heard sometimes there's more problems with generics. On the other hand, the drug companies have plenty of money so why give them more if there isn't a good reason? I've been on (Lithobid) Lithium ER with good results but now they want to put me on the new generic - can they force me to switch? Should I be concerned? I -and definitely the insurance company- will save money, but the insurance company doesn't have to deal with side effects. I started on Lithobid (brand name for lithium er slow release by SOL) due to gastrointestinal problems with Lithium Carbonate (not slow release).

I don't think they can force you to change.
If its a matter of one works well and another one doesn't, then I think withholding the one that does is concidered neglegence on the part of the practitioner.
From what I understand, many people on the immediacte release version also have more day-day fluctuations in their mood. Explain all your reasons for wanting to stay, and if not, go to another doctor.
