Will ritalin give me more energy

Posted by Jaynee on April 6, 2004, at 20:08:12

My sis is coming to visit easter, and she said she is going to bring me some ritalin to try. I am currently experimenting with my celexa and am now taking 10mg a day. Though I would like to try and add something to kick it up a bit.

Any ritalin users out there that like it for energy? I have been told once by a shrink that I have ADD, so maybe it will be good for me. Any advice?

Not if your truly ADD, if your not, considerably

If you are truly ADD, it probaly would not, just calm you down and make you focus. If you don't i may give you a buzz, becuase of the blocking of the reuptake of dopamine and noradrenaline It defiently would give you energy at higher doses such as 60-90mg ADD or not. But at those doses it can be addictive. I don't really recommend it anyways, there's provigil(prescribed for excessive daytime sleepiness) and wellbutrin(anti-depressant) which both have stimulating properties. But its your choice. There's also Ginseing which you can buy almost at any grocery store, its pretty stimulating too.

I use Ritilin for energy. I only take a small dose -- 5 mg. It does hype me up even at that small of a dose. Needless to say, I am extremely med-sensitive. Sometimes if I am especially fatigued I will take 10 mg. However, I can only tolerate the med for a few days, and then it stops working ... "stim burnout."

When I burn out on Ritilin, I take Dexedrine since it works on a different neurotransmitter. Again, only 5 mg. Sometimes, when all else fails, I take one 5 mg. tablet of Dex and Rit together!

It may sound crazy, but this is what has worked the best for me. My pdoc had the idea to try both the Dexedrine and Ritilin, and alternate them. I can never take them for longer than a week without stopping for a day or so because of burnout. I end up feeling sick and tired, and the stims only make that worse.

It's a vicious cycle, but often necessary for me to get through the day. I have tried all other stims out there, including Provigil and Wellbutrin (not really stimulants, but with stimulating properties.)

I have "mixed reviews" among pdocs on whether or not I have ADD. Most seem to think I do have it, however I have also been diagnosed as BPII, and the BPII symptoms may show themselves as ADD symptoms.

I have also heard (like the previous poster) that if someone truly has ADD, the stimulants won't give them a rush of energy as they do for me.

take care,
cindy

I haven't tried the ritalin yet. My sis did give me some, so I will try it tomorrow.

I too have had the "does she have ADD or BPII" syndrome. Who the hell knows, but I do know I sometimes get so frigin tired I just about stop living. I am starting a new job, it will be the first time in a long time I will be expected to work full-time and I am very concerned about whether I can handle it.

Of course that alone is a horrible cycle. Because if I am so tired and all I can do is work and sleep, then I get so depressed because I have absolutely no life. So needless to say better living through chemistry, so I need some type of speed to get through the day. I already take pills to sleep. Starting to live like Elvis, which is okay, so long as I don't start to look like him.
