Sodium phosphates

Posted by AMD on December 31, 2004, at 15:44:03

Are the hypertonic (mono,di) sodium phosphates in typical enema solutions dangerous? Do they have an affect on antidepressants and/or brain function? I have a colonoscopy coming up and I just want to make sure these are safe and won't interfere with anything having to do with my cognitive functioning and/or recent improvements in mood. I also fear dehydration etc. Are these all things that are really nothing to worry about?

Just make sure you aren't dehydrated before you use the enema. It draws a fairly substantial amount of water into the gut. The increased volume stimulates peristalsis, and voila, you are ready for the scope.

There should be no cognitive or mood effects.

I have been drinking like crazy but I have dry mouth big time. Related? Or just a cold, perhaps?

I'm also a bit worried about hypernatremia. Is this something I need to be concerned over? I read the warnings and ... scary! I don't want shunken brain cells. The only symptom I've had is a slight pain in my side (left), and dry mouth. Of course that's enough to get me to freak out ...

Hi!

Don't worry, hypernatremia will only occur if you get dehydrated. So long as you maintain a high fluid intake you'll be fine.

Ed.

Well ... my lips are very dry, and I've been sleeping for the past five hours so I didn't drink anything. I've been drinking fluids like a madman now! I did expel the liquid before heading back to bed. How would I know if I'd gotten dehydrated or anything?

Hello!

You don't need to worry about whether you were dehydrated, I'm sure you'll be fine now you've increased your fluid intake. I'm sure that if you were dehydrated it was only mild.

One final question -- how much of the ~18g of sodium phosphates is actually absorbed (vis-a-vis daily sodium intake), and how long after administration would it take for your body to have eliminated the administered sodium?

thx

The sodium stays in the gut, pretty much. There can be some phosphate uptake if you're dehydrated when you use the product (that's why that warning exists), but the sodium is a non-issue. Even if all the sodium was absorbed, your kidneys could deal with it in a couple of hours.

Cool -- I feel ok now, except I have this pain in my lower abdomen, left side, that's been bugging me. I wonder if it's related.

Thanks again, Lar.

Two ideas. One, it's irritated. That's your descending (sigmoid) colon, the closest part of the bowel to your anus. It might have gotten crampy from the enema, which is an irritant.

Two, there can be a little bruising from the scope.

It'll gradually fade away. You're welcome.
