some people have really catalogued the generic companies to say which are better, but i don't have that info.

what i can say is that name brand drugs made by the major pharma companies have very strict standards. generally speaking, they require that their tablets contain 99-101% of what they're supposed to contain, whereas generics (in the US) are only required to have 80-120% of what they say they contain. in other words, you could be getting less (or more) of your active ingredient and a lot more "stuff" (the fillers they use to make tablets and whatnot).

so your increased side effects could be because of this difference in tablet composition. some folks are very sensitive to generics for this reason.

I saw first hand how different generics can be from each other. I had been OK taking 75mg of generic nortriptyline for quite a while. However, my pharmacy filled the prescription with another preparation two weeks ago. I don't know the names of the manufacturers, but there were differences in the size and color of the capsules, despite the new ones being labelled as 25mg. By the end of the first week on the new preparation, I felt noticeably worse. I suspected the new generic as being the reason. So, I simply raised the dosage to 100mg. Problem solved.
