Bipolar OCD, best medication?

Posted by alienatari on February 13, 2005, at 0:52:48

Hey all. Well I have Bipolar I and OCD.
Im currently taking Zyprexa and Depakote.
Im starting to feel depressed again, I was on Parnate for about 3 months but now I am on no antidepressant. I think Parnate was the best drug for my depression but i couldnt handle the sedation, it left me in bed for almost all day.

Anyway I dont know which drug to try next for my depression, anxiety and OCD which I still have. My mania is under control though so I am not worried about that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anything I can suggest to my Psych would be great thanks. I am in Australia but my doc said he can import certain drugs or something like that. With this list i'll try and keep with the American names as best as I can.

Ok here goes:

Antidepressants:

MAOIs
Parnate

RIMAs
Aurorix

TCAs
Anafranil
Doxepin
Prothiaden
Allegron
Tofranil

SSRIs
Zoloft
Prozac
Paxil
Celexa
Luvox
Lexapro

NARI
Reboxotine

SNRI
Effexor

Other
(Avanza)Mirtazapine
Wellbutrin

Mood stabalisers
Epilim(Depakote)
Lithium

Antipsychotics
Solian
Zyprexa
Respridal
Seroquel
Abilify
Largactil(Thorazine)

Benzodiazepines
Valium
Ativan
Xanax
Seropax
Lexotan

Ive also been on Stilnox (Ambien I think its called in America) and a few beta-blockers, and also benztropine to control akathisia I had from some antipsychotics ive been on.

I really dont have any faith in antidepressants at the moment considering that I have tried so many and none have seemed to work. Anything, anything at all anyone could suggest I would greatly appreciate. I asked my psych about Lamictil and he didnt like the idea, also about Selegiline he also didnt think that was a good idea :( I was thinking of maybe trying the European anti-d called "stablon" but Im not sure.

Thanks and take care

Chris.

I think the most obvious choice is Nardil. It can work wonders for both depression and OCD.

Good luck!

Depakote for me does nothing for depression. Well maybe it does and I dont notice? But I really think its just, for me anyway, good for my mania.

Take care

Thanks for the info. So Nardil is better than Parnate for OCD?

Im a bit worried about Nardil because of the sedation mainly because Parnate has caused me so much sedation

Hi,

I think you said somewhere that Parnate was only sedating at high doses. Did you give low-dose Parnate a good trial to see if it was effective?

Ed.

The first time I took Nardil, I felt somewhat sedated for the first week or two. Thereafter, I found it energizing.

On the lower dose it was good for a while but lost its effect :(

The side effects I had while on Nardil subsided after some time of being on it; it is good if you don't have to work full-time while you are beginning it, but I did and survived. It would have been easier on me to have been on part-time work; The interesting thing is, I could have cut down on working, but the employers aren't too forthcoming with telling us the options we have when we are ill. I got the impression they would just as soon I leave rather than work with me. But lest I sound bitter, I had a very good nurse-manager at the time when I was having the most trouble, and she worked with me but kept telling me I was risking my health by continuing to work. I didn't think I could survive without working, because I am the only wage-earner in this household{the cat refuses to work, because I have supported her too long.] But I did suffer a total physical, mental and emotional breakdown, so here I am on disability and wanting to work, now that I am somewhat better, but I am not by any means stable; no one wants to hire someone that might show up one day and then not be able to work for days or weeks, and rightly so.
Nardil is a good medication, so give it a good try, and work through the side effects if you can. U'D
