Hello!
Stiff neck issue has been addressed before here, but has anyone notice the side effects of stiff neck and back muscle tightness going away? Welcom any feedbacks.

Hi Violet.
For me, I have found that I experience jaw clenching while taking SSRIs and MAOIs when they are not working properly. This usually disappears once the drug actually kicks-in and starts to work. I don't know if this is at all related to what you are experiencing, but I thought I'd at least reply to your question so that you know people are reading it. Perhaps no one posting right now has had the problem, but I have seen it described as a complaint. To add anything more on my part would be conjecture that I don't feel is appropriate here. Better that someone else chime-in.
Good luck.
- Scott

Thanks for the response Scott. Just got a call from my doc's office. She recommended reducing 100mg to 50mg. We'll see.

Hey Scott- I was able to respond again because I got an email notification but I still don't see my post on psychobabble. I have tried reloading/refreshing and restarting my computer but no success. welcome any hints.

Hi, Violet. If my experience is any guide, it won't go away, it will get worse. For me, the stiff neck happened on Prozac (very, very bad), Zoloft (very, very bad), Celexa (bad), Lexapro (bad) and Cymbalta (mild). Didn't happen at all on Effexor or Paxil.
It started for me with tightness in my upper back, knots along my shoulder blades that were very tight and painful. Eventually it traveled up into my neck. By the end of eight years on Prozac, the pain was so bad I actually thought about suicide. I saw chiropractors, physical therapists, pain management doctors and had two cervical epidurals. All because I didn't know it was caused by the Prozac. When I mentioned it to doctors, I was told it wasn't from the Prozac, it was because I had disk problems in my neck (which I do). However, when I switched from Prozac to Effexor, within three weeks, the pain went from a 9 to a 3 (on a scale of 10).
When Effexor pooped out 4-5 years later, I tried Zoloft. Pain came back. I went back to Effexor, pain went away. Tried Celexa. Pain came back. Back to Effexor, pain gone. Tried Lexapro, pain came back. Went to no meds, pain went away. Back to Celexa, pain came back. Back to Effexor pain went away. The only SSRI that didn't cause neck pain was Paxil.
Now when a doctor tries to tell me SSRIs don't cause neck pain, I know better. I've experimented enought times to know for sure absolutely that they can and do!
I think reducing your dosage will help. I have found I can take 10mg of Celexa without too much pain. At 20mg it's intolerable.
Hope this helps.
Marsha

I, too, have experienced stiff neck with SSRIs. Prozac was the worst offender probably because it has the longest half life. Celexa and Lexapro a little less. Had a problem with Effexor, too, even at really low doses so I never got to the pain reduction benefit.
Cymbalta was interesting. I was started at 30mg, which was WAY too high and had every side effect in the book. But I tapered backwards and found that 5mg gave me energy with minimal stiff neck. Unfortunately, no help with pain at that dose, however.
Which serotonin receptor is causing the problem with stiff neck? Anyone?
