I am too stressed and scared and anxious and depressed to understand or to research. Please explain in layman's terms why a D1 agnoist and D2antagonist help depression (and anxiety?)

Oh God, I don't remember now. It was a post of SLS's from a couple of years ago. Basically that it balances out dopamine in the brain - where there's not enough it increases it and where there's too much it decreases it. Some stuff about presynaptic autorecepters. I can't think.
Phillipa, I truly hope you get better on the Luvox. I prayed for you tonight.

hey! using antipsychotics (preferably at LOW doses) to help with some forms of depression has been done for a long, long time--Triavi, the perphenazine+Elavil combo, for instance, has been used since the '60s for this purpose. With the newer atypicals, research shows that combining them with antidepressants actually leads to an **increase** in the concentrations of key neurotransmitters that are often at lower levels during a depressive phase. Keep in mind, though, that any antipsychotic can induce depression if the dose is high enough. I took low dose abilify, and I think the best results are with abilify+antidepressant(s), with the abilify below 10mgs, unless you're having issues with psychosis, in which case it may be best to go up to 10-15mgs. Good luck!

Thanks. That's what I'll be doing. I'm on Celexa but have residual anxiety, pretty severe, and a less than complete response to the Celexa. I'm prescribed 2.5 mg Abilify to start and I may start even lower since I'm a scaredy cat about new meds and it has such a long half life that if I get some awful akathisia it'll be with me for a long time.Marsha

You betcha. Wouldn't it be great if I took my first dose and my anxiety magically melted away and I suddenly felt like going out in the yard and planting a garden?Remember your thread about what your magic pill would do? That's what mine would do.
