I have been taking klonopin for years for Social Anxiety (I think GAD as well). It's worked 70%, but I seem down and never quite myself. I've tried all the other anti depressants, they just gave me side affects with no benefits. I'm currently switching to Lyrica and getting off the klonopin. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. My doctor always thought that an MAOI would work well for me. He told me years ago that if he only had one try at a med for me it would have been Nardil. I've always held off because of the weight gain and sexual side affects, not to mention the food restrictions. Now I'm holding out for the EMSAM MAOI patch that should be coming out within 6 months or so. I'm just not sure how long I can wait if the Lyrica waits. So I'm wondering if if I should dive into Nardil, maybe Parnate for the time being. I appreciate any of you that take or have taken these meds to share what I might expect from a side affect stand point, food restriction stand point and benefit standpoint. Thanks so much!

In reply to Nardil, how does it work for you with SAD?, posted by RobertDavid on October 9, 2005, at 13:45:14
Hey Robert,
I'm diving into Nardil this Friday. I was on Paxil for 3 yrs for SAD and it worked very well but stopped working 8 months ago. I've tried 4 SSRI's since then and they do zippo for my anxiety. I don't see why you've put off Nardil for so long!! I just had an appt with the Director of Mental Health at Columbia University and he said he would have put me on Nardil months ago. He uses it for many of his patients with anxiety disorders, finding it to be far superior than ssri's. Social anxiety tends to be comorbid with atypical depression and there are no better drugs out there for this than maoi's. SSRI's supposedly have a 15% success rate for Social Anxiety while Nardil has a 60-85% success rate. You've put off trying Nardil because of sexual side effects and weight gain? SSRI's cause sexual dysfunction and weight gain too! I'd be willing to put on 10 pounds in a heartbeat if it enabled me to live a higher quality of life! weight gain vs. anxiety/depression? Take your pick :)
I tried Klonopin too, but benzos kill my drive/ motivation to succeed, cause me to forget everything, and worsen depression. Benzos really aren't the best long-term treatment option.Do some research on Nardil and you will find hundreds of wonder stories on it. I have researched this drug to death and have never found one instance where it hasn't worked. There are more risks than the "safer" ssri's, but, for treatment resistant anxiety/depression, there is no substitute -- nothing comes close!
There are many people on this board who take Nardil so you should speak with them about their experiences.
I'm going to start a post when I start taking nardil for those who are considering it.

CK1:
I too tried Paxil, but even a low doses it knocked me out. I was so tired and had zero sex drive. My doctor has always been willing to put me on Nardil, it was just me that wasn't ready. I too would be willing to put on 10 pounds(if thats all I'd really gain) if I knew what it was like to feel socially normal and gain a zest for life, have fun. I've read all about it and am hoping to hear from others that can share their expericences with it. Please post how you're doing once you get on it!
