Anyone had a long term AD effect from Lamictal?

Posted by jclint on November 27, 2005, at 15:07:38

Hi guys.

I think Lamictal is helping me somewhat. The past couple of weeks I've certainly felt the best I've felt for many months, possibly years. I hope its not just a placebo effect - I doubt it.

However, I've just been knocked down a peg reading about the poop-out syndrome associated with the drug. I assumed that it was only SSRIs that stopped working randomly. So I'm a bit depressed by the possibity that this feeling wont last long.

I need some encouragement... has anyone had success long term on Lamictal? I'd hate to see this one taken away after being so relieved I've found something of help - the thought is genuinely depressing.

Thanks,
John :)

Hi John

I'm curious about that too.

I think I did see some posts from people saying that they had long term benefits.

So far I've been taking it for about four months and have been very gradually raising the dose for all of that time. I also just found out that because I'm pregnant I am metabolising it much faster than normal so I still have a way to go before I reach even the equivalent of 200 mgs.

My experience has been a gradual improvement over that time. It does seem to keep pooping out but then, I was rapid cycling before I went on it and I think the cycles started to change to respond to the dose increases. I have been getting longer and longer periods of being 'normal' relative to depressed or mixed manic symptoms. I am really really hoping that some of the 'normal' times I am getting where I have good energy and a positive outlook will become standard.

Are you taking it for bipolar or unipolar depression?

Hi Fuscia. I'm taking it for unipolar (I think!) with a strong agitated and anxiety element. I've not had any response to conventional ADs. I was drawn to Lamictal for its AD properties and also that it might be able to smooth out some of my mood swings (that occur during the day). During the last few weeks I haven't been obsessing about what med to try next, or constantly ruminating about my depressed state, so surely thats a sign its working. I've also noticed that my mood swings (depressed early in the day, moving up to energetic in the late evenings) have evened out considerably. And no side effects, so it seems a great main medication at this stage. Fingers crossed :S
