Anyone meds poop-out and work again much later?

Posted by Jax on January 3, 2006, at 3:43:29

I've been on Paxil for about 8 years. I'm now up to 60mg and it's definitely pooped-out. (I've tried many other SSRI's). Anyway, my husband and I are thinking of having a baby, which would mean coming off the Paxil (VERY SLOWLY) for a long period. I'm wondering if it would be worth trying it again a couple of years later. Has anyone had the experience of a pooped-out med working again after a year or two?

hi! I kind of have experienced this...I tried Effexor with so-so results and I discontinued it. A couple of years later, I tried Cymbalta, which worked reasonably well. The two drugs are different, but highly similar (the big difference is that Cymbalta inhibits reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine equally, whereas Effexor works most on serotonin, then does norepinephrine at varying amounts at higher dosages).

If and when you need something again, you might want to try another antidepressant, or maybe a combo, like "California Rocketfuel" (effexor plus remeron). Augmentation helps with partial response, so I imagine it might also be helpful for "poop-out". Also, some people derive benefit from adding a stimulant, benzo, mood-stabilizer, or atypical antipsychotic.

I've had the experience of med's working better after they pooped out when I improved my diet and added supplements. Especially folate, fish oil and tryptophan.

warm regards ~Jake
