Feedback - Lunesta / Ambien CR like an acid trip?

Posted by vbAgent on January 5, 2006, at 11:00:35

As some of you already know, I suffer from insomnia and adult ADD. Roughly six months ago I was prescribed Lunesta 2mg. It helped at first until I became tolerant. I experienced (just barely noticable if I stared) "trippy" visual hallucinations after taking it; like being on low grade LSD. The pdoc then prescribed Ambien CR 12.5mg, which helped a lot, but it also caused "trippy" effects. As of four days ago she then switched me back to Lunesta 2mg. Now, it has absolutely no effect on me and I still get the "trippy" voodoo.

Well, I left a message with the on-call pdoc because my regular pdoc is out of town until Jan 19th. He wants to see me this Tuesday...???

1) Am I experiencing rebound insomnia due to switching from Ambien CR to Lunesta?

2) Do you think the on-call pdoc suspects salient psychosis or what?

3) Or, am I overreacting with catastrophic thoughts? Grrr, I hate when this happens.

My current med list: Toprol XL 100mg, Prinzide 10/12.5mg, Minoxidil 10mg (all three for hypertension) and Adderall [25mg/day that's divided into three doses]

Any feedback would be a huge help. Thanks!!

I'm reducing my total Adderall dosage to 15mg/day (5mg 3x/day) and sticking w/ Lunesta 2mg. The pdoc prescribed 10mg 3x/day but I'm getting too much CNS stimulation.

Anyway, I'm disappointed that no one has responded to my post yet...Maybe the subject line was misleading. Thankfully, I have resolved the problem.

I feel like I'm talking to myself by replying to my own post...LOL...Peace ya'll & have a great weekend. :-)

Lunesta seems to be more "trippy" than Ambien CR. Of course, I only experience this effect if I don't quickly fall asleep after taking it - this isn't the issue though (that I do not think was made clear in my post). The issue, as far as I can tell at this point, is treatment-resistant insomnia, tolerance, or both.

I think increasing the dose (or adding something else) would be a mistake...Want to keep it simple.

I'll talk to the substitute pdoc about this on Tuesday.

Peace ya'll...

I have had very "trippy" effects on Ambien, especially at doses at/above 15 mg.

A few months ago I took about 17.5 mg over a few hours (and hadn't been taking it that long either)...My intention was to go to sleep but I ended up staying awake. I was spending the night at a hotel and left my room in the middle of the night to hit a nearby snack machine (outdoors).

Tough to describe it, but the sky was purplish with a "star-like" effect and almost like their were water fountains spraying all over the horizon. I remember thinking to myself "how beautiful" the night was...not realizing until the next day just how *****ed up I was. I've never used LSD but have tried "mushrooms" and from my experience the Ambien had a more psychadelic effect.

I now keep my dosage under 12.5 mg and make sure to go right to bed after taking it and haven't had any more "trippy" effects--I think I've developed tolerance to this effect.

I only tried Lunesta for a few days 2 mg), but didn't have similiar effects (I stayed up once to see if it would occur).

This is the end of the thread.
