Zyprexa and weight loss?

Posted by RSIRL on February 2, 2006, at 8:46:55

Has anyone lost any significant amount of weight on Zyprexa? Does a lower dose make a difference? I recently lowered my dose of Zyprexa, and with dieting I have been able to lose 5 lbs in 1 week. I am now losing at a lower rate, but still losing. I am just wondering if this is something to be happy about or is it a short term thing. I let myself gain alot of weight on Zyprexa and now have a long way to go to get it off.

Thanks!

ZYPREXA has been the bane of my existence since I've gained 20+ lbs on it in 3 months. I've been doing ALOT of research for an antidote though because it works so well for my Bipolar. Here's a quote that mentions 3 meds including Topomax from

http://www.loftusmd.com/Articles/AED/topiramate.html

Topamax lacks many of the more serious side effects seen with the older AEDs including a lack of known problems with bone marrow and an extremely small incidence of liver abnormalities apparently confined to patients with prior liver abnormalities. It does have a fairly common side effect of kidney stones (between 1-2%). It is also one of only three AEDs that have a statistically proven propensity to lose weight (Zonegran and Felbamate are the others). Other side effects include a change in taste, particularly with carbonated drinks, tingling in the extremities, and at times interference with mental function. The last side effect is highly dependent upon the rate of dose administration and is relatively uncommon among patients started at a low dose and advanced slowly. Dosing rates must be individualized based upon the patient and the other medications they are currently prescribed.

I see my PDOC tomorrow to discuss all of this and will keep you posted, likely under a new thread in a few weeks as I have a lot of other info that I've gathered, and also this will be big news if I start to lose. Good Luck to us All!

Will do. I spoke to her via email and it looks like she's going to have me try Geodon, instead of antidote to Zyprexa but I'm going to push for Tomopax as well, to kick start this weight loss.
