Hi,
I just picked up a pamphlet about OMACOR from my local CVS. Apparently "OMACOR®(omega-3-acid ethyl esters) is the first and only FDA-approved prescription omega-3 fatty acid product." It is just approved for people with high triglycerides but I wonder if it wouldn't be a great way of getting omega-3 dependably for depression? Currently I take MaxEPA by Now Foods and while it carries both the UPS symbol and has GMP certification you would have to think that something approved by the FDA would be safer and better controlled. Or maybe not ;)
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.
Thanks!
Liz

BTW, the website is http://www.omacorrx.com/
I called the company and asked about EPA and DHA levels. Apparently there is app. 465 mg EPA and 375 mg DHA in each capsule. After I called I found the information on their site:

I am seeing my pdoc tomorrow and will bring this up as I would love to stay off ADs (I just came off Parnate).

Again, it would probably be a while untill it comes to canada, but I have got so much benefit from o3 that it would be nice to get a quality product under insurance if possable.

Omacor has been approved in the UK for quite some time. Maxepa is also approved here.

Do you mean MaxEPA from Now Foods that I currently get over the counter here? I'm a little confused...
In the UK is Omacor approved for high triglyceride levels only? How is off-label prescribing regarded in the UK anyway? Just curious...Liz

I saw my pdoc today and showed him the pamphlet about Omacor. He had never heard of it before, but he saw my point about it probably being purer as well as it being cheaper so he prescribed it for me.
We'll see how it goes!

Hi

The UK brand is supplied by 'Seven Seas'. Perhaps 'Now Foods' promote MaxEPA in the US on behalf of 'Seven Seas'.
>In the UK is Omacor approved for high triglyceride levels only?
No, it's also approved as an 'adjuvant treatment in secondary prevention after myocardial infarction, in addition to other standard therapy'.
>How is off-label prescribing regarded in the UK anyway?
It's fairly common. What sort of off-label prescribing were you thinking of?

If there is only 475 of EPA is each capsule, is it safe to take 3 or 4 of these a day to get the same effect as some of the over the counter omega's that have a much higher EPA is each capsule? What else does Omacor have in it?
