topomax generic does it exist?

Posted by challenged on March 9, 2006, at 12:12:38

I asked my pharmacist about this generic form of topomax some of you have spoken of that you say you are taking and he tells me that there is no such form of this pill available to be sold to the public in its generic form .......I am confused. He says all meds have a generic name but some are not sold generically. Just was interested in hearing what the name of the generic topomax you are taking is and why the disturbing conflicting information I am getting. Makes me very concerned for all of us.

My sister is in rehab as I have written before suffering from multiple strokes from lack of correct protocol at the hand of a nurse's misuse of pulling a heartline. Short version outcome is she survived cancer surgery with a benign tumor and cannot speak or swallow now. We have kept it out of the media yes headline news Nevertheless my sister may never be the same.

Hopefully, you can see my concern, on what may seem trivial in nature to some, is not to me. My trust level has dropped a bit. I want to know what the generic you are taking is called so I might ask my pharmacist, yet again, with more info about this and asd ask why he tells me a different story. There should only be one common answer to this. Either a generic one exists or one does not.

Am I not correct in assuming this?

Thanks for your time reading this and any input will again be greatly appreciated by anyone.

The generic name is topiramate. Topamax is only available as brand name Topamax.

Thank you Ed for your reply. At the risk of sounding like a simpleton I just want to be totally clear on this, if you will...... I was told that every med has a generic name but the availability of all meds in generic form for consumer consumption is not; therefore that should coincide with what you are saying ......correct?

Hi

Yes, every drug has a generic name. Some mediations are only available as branded products though.

Again thanks I am going with your answer and my pharmacist of over 40 years in the industry for now. My only concern and question is to storm rider.
I have cut and copied this message she had posted only because I question what her pharmacist has told her or giving her and not her honesty by a long shot...she has given much good advice and helped many many people on here including myself;.....just out of concern for her to double check her info please......

A generic version has just become available...
at least my pharmacy offered me the choice of a generic brand two months ago for the first time so I am assuming that it has just become available

The generic brand is still costly but significantly lower than the original...

ask your pharmacist

Have been using the generic for a month or so only, so cannot really say.
I did lose weight on the topomax and would assume that one would lose weight on the generic as I have not suddenly gained weight since changing to the generic...
as I said in a previous post, if the meds are not identical in properties, the pharmacist cannot switch them so I think it is safe to assume that the generic would help with weight loss too...

I am only concerned at how this person is getting the generic form if in fact it doesn't exist. Causes me concern and much confusion. Any comments? DR BOB? Just scares me. Anyone know the answers as to what we are told and what we are taking? Thanks

All NDAs and ANDAs and medications in general can be searched at Drugs@FDA

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.Search_Drug_Name

These are letters of approval and additional correspondances.

There appear to be ANDAs for generics communicating with the FDA between 2003 and 2005 for topiramate, which was first filed in 1996 as Topamax. This indicates that a generic may come in the following years, possibly.
