withdrawal and compulsive behaviors--please help!

Posted by jessers11581 on March 31, 2006, at 18:51:16

Every time I try to taper off meds, I get severe anxiety that results in compulsive behaviors (such as constant nose-blowing, lip chewing, nail biting, eating sugar, etc.). And no matter how many deep breaths I take or how often I sit back and say, "Okay, you need to stop doing these things now", they continue to persist. I feel out of control! I suppose the most harmful of these behaviors is the overeating of sugar--I'm starting to gain weight! But the nose-blowing really bothers me too, because it makes my throat raw and my voice begins to sound husky (ugh). I don't know why, but I can't STAND to have any mucous in my throat whatsoever, and I seem to have a lot of it lately (maybe from drinking milk, I don't know). But ANYWAY, is anxiety like this typical of withdrawal, and will it eventually settle down once I've been off meds for awhile? I would appreciate any experiences that you can share! Thanks, Jess

Jess,
What are you withdrawing from?? And, yes the milk is probably causing excess mucus in your throat. You may be tapering too quickly-slowing down may help. Let me know what you're going off of, and why.

Hi Tyler! Well, I'm actually not tapering any more. I decided to go back on the medication because I realized that my life is a little too stressful right now for me to try and stop. I'm going to wait until the summer. But anyway, the med is Cymbalta, and I want to stop taking it due to no sex drive, blunted emotions, lack of motivation, fatigue, etc. I just don't like all the baggage that comes with antidepressants and I'm tired of taking them--I've been taking them for ten years straight! I just feel like it's time for me to try and take control. I want to FEEL things again, you know? Thanks for the response! Jess
